Long Term Care & Acute Care
In most inpatient settings the facility is responsible for paying for all services including the use of an appropriate support surface. Examples of inpatient facilities would be acute-care hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and long-term acute hospitals. Facilities often contract with third party vendors to handle support surface needs, and receive reimbursement on prospectively determined rates.
Medicare does not pay for durable medical equipment (including support surfaces) in nursing homes excluding Intermediate Care Facility/Mentally Retarded facilities. Nursing homes are not considered the patient’s home due to the fact that they have a medical component. Nursing homes should have a license stating how they are registered.
Medicare pays for durable medical equipment in Assisted Living facilities otherwise known as custodial care facilities.
